Last minute run-around

There are officially six shopping days till Christmas. I am almost done with the Christmas shopping. I have been putting off those last-minute items and avoiding the big shops (the local mega mall) cause this time last year I experienced a panic attack after visiting the ill-placed children’s playground in the mall. It must have been designed by someone who doesn’t have little kids – 2 exits PLUS escalators. Wow. Thanks a million.

Of course my 2.5 year old son thought it would be hilarious to run off down the escalators as quick as a flash while I’m stuck at the playground with a crying 4 month old baby girl in the pram. What the bleep was I going to do first? I dashed down the escalators and back up again with him in my arms. Baby girl was still there. In the pram. Crying. No one had run off with her. The thing that was so hard was that no one offered to help. I blame the Christmas last-minute run-around. It must have sucked all the generosity out of people.

It’s a shame that Christmas can bring the worst out in people isn’t it? There seems to be more rage around. Here’s some I can think of:

  • Car park rage – stealing car spots when someone has claimed it with their indicator
  • Pram rage – maintaining a tragectory and not deviating from it even when there is a little old lady shuffling towards you
  • Trolley rage – see pram rage above
  • Christmas tree rage – my mother experienced this during a pre-Christmas sale. A lady followed mum out of the store insisting that she had just bought her tree and that she should return it to the store. Mum doesn’t suffer fools gladly and sent her packing!
  • Waiting-in-the-line rage – the credit card machine is on the blink, the person in front of you wants to return one item, exchange another and wants a discount on a book cause it’s got a bent cover
  • You-must-have-another-one-out-the-back rage – I’ve been on the receiving end of this one when I worked in bookshops while studying at university. Sold out means just that!

What types of Christmas last-minute run-around rages have you experienced?
